KUCHING: Healthcare-associated infections are the most frequent adverse events in healthcare delivery worldwide, causing substantial morbidity and mortality.

In light of this a seminar on infection prevention and control was held here recently to discuss best practices and to enhance collaboration among healthcare professionals.

The seminar organised by KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital was attended by 140 participants from private and public hospitals in Malaysia and Brunei. It was held on July 15-16.

KPJ Kuching general manager, Nurhazimah Mahat, cited the World Health Organisation in highlighting healthcare-associated infections.

“The infections often exacerbate underlying chronic conditions, leading to hospitalisation and additional costs,” she said.

To combat infectious disease outbreaks, she stressed the importance of escalating infection prevention and control initiatives and collaborating with hospital-based infection prevention programmes to share best practices.

During the seminar, speakers from various specialties shared their expertise and best practices in infection prevention and control.

KPJ Kuching medical director Dr. David Ling addressed the challenges faced by hospitals in implementing and maintaining effective infection prevention programmes.
