KUCHING: Following heavy rainfall during the early hours of today (Mar 3), homes in Batu Kawa were submerged in floodwaters, leading residents to evacuate to safer locations.

The State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported that it responded to a distress call at 4.27am reporting rising waters in Taman Desa Wira, Batu Kawa.

Firefighters from Padungan, Kota Samarahan and Petra Jaya fire stations were deployed to provide assistance.

Bomba’s statement also mentioned the deployment of five four-wheel vehicles and two marine boats to aid residents in the affected area.

As of 9.10am, the evacuation process was still ongoing.

At present, nine teenagers, three elderly individuals and one child have been evacuated in Batu Kawa.

Bomba said it is actively monitoring several areas including Kampung Segong, Jalan Rantau Panjang Biawak Pasir Ulu, Taman Beverly, Taman Duranda Emas Mile 18 and Sebang Plai.

Additionally, they reported a landslide in Kampung Sungai Bedil, although flash floods in other areas are under control, and no further evacuations are currently taking place.
