MIRI: The Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Awards (SHTA), now in its 9th edition, is a key initiative by the Sarawak Government to acknowledge the contributions of the tourism sector’s stakeholders.

Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) president Audry Wan Ulok highlighted the importance of the awards in recognising the efforts of industry players, particularly during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The tourism industry was significantly impacted by the pandemic, experiencing both the earliest effects and the most prolonged recovery period.

“We acknowledge the hardships faced by these players and appreciate their perseverance. Their efforts have been supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts (MTCP) and various tourism agencies, making this recognition through the SHTA even more significant,” she told a press conference at the Pullman Hotel today (Apr 5).

Audry said that award recipients would maintain high standards and continue to serve as exemplars within the industry.

“The nominees have demonstrated solid track records and performances. This not only sets a positive example but also ensures ongoing support from the government and promises future growth for the industry,” she added.

The theme for this year’s awards, ‘Wind of Resilience,’ celebrates the excellence and resilience of local tourism industry players.

The nomination period, started from March 25 to 30, featured eight categories with 27 sub-categories, opened to all local tourism industry players.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for September 27 at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here, to be officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
