KUCHING: Plantations and Commodities Deputy Minister Datuk Willie Mongin said on Monday he could work with any state leaders and that he was not their competitor.

“I am here to complement and work together with the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state ruling coalition for the people,” said the Bersatu MP.

He said this when asked after a function here today (March 29) whether he would be contesting under Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in the upcoming general election.

Asked about possible cooperation between Bersatu and GPS, the former PKR MP said he would leave to the leadership.

“They know better in terms of their planning. As a party man and a government politician, I will focus on developing my constituency, state and nation.

“There is good understanding between us. Solidarity between the state and federal governments still needs to be strengthened for political stability and to spur the economy during this Covid-19 pandemic.

“I leave it to the leadership of the party but if entrusted, I am ready,” added Willie.

Recently, it was stated that GPS might be looking into accommodating Bersatu in the upcoming state and general elections.

GPS whip in Parliament, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the decision and the final stand would be made and announced by the Chief Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Bersatu holds one of the state seats through Krian assemblyman Datuk Ali Biju who won the seat as a Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate in the 11th state election in 2016.
