SIBU: The indiscriminate dumping of construction waste at Sibujaya caused by rapid urbanisation has become a major challenge to the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), said chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.

“It will definitely expose humans to environmental degradation such as flooding, drainage obstruction and spread of infectious diseases.

“The council wishes to inform the public that the council has identified a land at Jalan Industri Permata 6A Sibujaya for the construction of a landfill.

“The site will cater to construction waste except bulky waste, chemical waste, garden waste, zine, wood and domestic waste effective Sept 1,” he said at the SRDC full council meeting yesterday (Aug 30).

Companies will be charged based on the weight of the lorry and the number of trips to the waste disposal site, among other terms.

“The dumpsite operating days will be on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 am to 5 pm,” Sempurai said.
