SIMANGGANG: Focus can be directed to development, thanks to the peace that has been achieved in the state.

In stating this Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it allows the government to focus on development priorities.

“When our state is peaceful, we can shift our focus towards development, which should be our top priority in the post-independence era.

“We have inherited the sacrifices of our elders, and it is incumbent upon us to utilise our time to develop our state, including the town of Simanggang,” he said when officiating the Rumah Sri Aman Gallery here on Sunday (Oct. 1).

Originally known as Rumah Simanggang, the Rumah Sri Aman marks the 50th anniversary of the Sri Aman Declaration of 1973.

This declaration, a pact between Parti Rakyat Kalimantan Utara (PARAKU) and the Sarawak government, contributed to political stability in Sarawak.

The building, said Abang Johari, has witnessed these historic events that led to the change of the name of the town from Simanggang to Sri Aman.

“This serves as a symbol of our unity across various ethnicities, religions, and political beliefs, enabling us to pursue the development of Sarawak.

“The peaceful environment is the foundation upon which we endeavour to enhance Sarawak’s income through a knowledge-based economy,” he said.

Due to its architectural uniqueness and historical significance, Rumah Sri Aman was officially designated as a historical building under the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance 2019 on March 21, 2021.

This designation, he asserted, ensures that the house remains untouched and unaltered, preserving its original form for future generations.

“Our goal is to ensure that future generations understand why this house stands here, its architectural significance, the individuals involved in its construction, and its historical purpose,” he said.

As such, he encouraged the younger generation, saying: “Learn from history. Emulate the good aspects and avoid repeating mistakes.

“Analyse successful endeavours and strive to replicate their achievements for the betterment of our state.”
