SIBU: The International Night programme held in conjunction with the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) is a great initiative by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), said Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government said that the programme is also a great step to elevate the BCF to international status.

“BCF, which started many years ago, has become one of the most important events for the people of Sibu. This is where the journey to understand our cultural identity started.

“So, in a way, BCF holds a special place in our hearts. It has been a symbol of our unity, our traditions, and our rich heritage,” he said in his speech when officiating at the event at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang here last night (July 22).

Tiang hoped that SMC could open up the festival to the world by inviting performers from other countries to come.

“At least have one night, just like this one, dedicated especially to the international community.

“By doing so, we will not only showcase our cultural splendour to the world but also open the doors of Sibu to diverse cultures from other countries,” he stressed.

The Pelawan assemblyman said that the festival should not be confined to the boundaries of Borneo alone.

Instead, we should embrace the global stage and invite participants and visitors from all corners of the globe. Especially in this ASEAN region. There is so much to explore and discover.

“So, I believe BCF can be a platform that leads to an understanding of different cultures in Borneo and also in ASEAN countries,” he said.

Tiang also hoped that through the programme, the town could establish more friendships with neighbouring countries.

“I hope that we will continue to make Sibu a hub for future events and a centre for all kinds of conferences.

“I am sure that with the completion of the Pan Borneo Highway and the second trunk road, Sibu will be a much more vibrant town.

“Sibu has a lot to offer; we have so many foods that we can promote. I think we need to get more famous local foods to trade in BCF,” he said.

Also present were SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh, SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, Sibu Member of Parliament Oscar Ling, and others.
