SIBU: Jessica Ajik David was crowned the Kumang after defeating nine other beauties at the Borneo Dayak Cultural Festival (BDCF) beauty contest here last night (July 21).

The 18-year-old Selangau lass went home with RM5,000 in cash along with a crown and various other complementary prizes.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Clara Amanda Buyong from Julau was awarded the Lulong (first runner-up) title, while Song lass Angelina Rani Gawan, 23, was named Selinggar Matahari (second runner-up).

Clara brought home an RM3,000 cash prize and other complementary prizes, while Angelina took home RM2,000 in cash and other complementary gifts.

Seven other finalists received RM600 each in consolation awards.

Jessica’s victory was not a first for her in beauty pageants, as she had previously won the Kumang title for Song Gawai Dayak 2023 and the Selinggar Matahari title for Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) Gawai Dinner.

Filled with gratitude, Jessica expressed her heartfelt thanks to all her supporters, hoping that their encouragement and support would continue on her journey.

“This still feels unreal that I won (the Kumang BDCF title) tonight. Of course, I am proud of my achievements, and thanks to all my supporters,” she said when met by reporters last night (July 21).

Despite her achievements, Jessica remains grounded and is currently waiting for better educational opportunities to further her studies.

When asked for advice for others aspiring to join beauty contests, she encouraged them to be brave and seize every opportunity that comes their way.

“I also hope I can inspire all pretty young ladies out there, especially the Iban, to join a beauty contest like this. Let’s work together to preserve our Iban customs and traditions, ensuring they stand the test of time,” she said.
