Jobless man to enter defence on drug charges

SIBU: The High Court here on Wednesday ordered a jobless man to enter his defence to two drug related charges including trafficking in Methamphetamine.

Justice Wong Siong Tung said having heard and considered evidence of the witnesses called by the prosecution and submissions by counsel for the accused, the Court was of the view that the prosecution has established a prima facie case against the accused in respect of the first charge under section 39B(1)(b) of the Dangerous Drug Act.

“This Court also finds that the prosecution has also established a prima facie case against the accused in respect of the second charge under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952,” he stated.

Wong Lee Ming was charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs, to wit, 69.82 grams of Methamphetamine at a house at Jalan Ek Dee at about 7.10pm on Feb 16 last year.

The offence upon conviction provides for a death sentence or life imprisonment and if not sentenced to death, be punished with whipping of not less than 12 strokes.

The second charge stated that Lee Ming had in his possession dangerous drugs, to wit, 21.83 grams of Methamphetamine at the same venue and time, an offence which carries a jail term of between two years and five years with whipping of not less than three strokes but not more than nine strokes.

Justice Wong set July 4 for trial.
