LUNDU: Social activist Voon Shiak Ni is appealing to the government to build a bridge for Kampung Selampit folk to enable them to access their land across a nearby river.
She said the bridge is urgently needed for the safety of hundreds of families in the village.
“I just visited the village upon hearing about the need for such a bridge. There are a few hundred families in the village and one can imagine how many hundreds need to cross the river daily to go to work and to school.
“I went there two days ago and saw the hardship and inconvenience of the villagers. They have to use boats every day to carry out their daily activities. School children need to cross to go to school as there is no school in the village.
“There is also no health clinic in the village and villagers told me that any sick person needs to wait for the boat and if it is at night, it will be a long wait,” she said today.
Voo added that families who have cars need to rent car garages or build their own car shed to shelter their cars across the river.
“The villagers have been calling on the former Barisan Nasional (BN) government for decades to build the bridge, but nothing happened.
“The Selampit bridge is a crucial need. The villagers are not looking for a multi-billion ringgit iconic bridge but a basic bridge so that they can ‘cari makan’ (earn income),” she said.
