MIRI: In the pursuit of development, Kedayans must not forget their roots, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
According to him, the new generation is exposed to cultural assimilation that causes their mother tongue to be used infrequently.
“Advancement must be in line with the cultural developments that need to be passed down to the next generation but this does not mean we are against development,” he said at a cultural event in conjunction with the Makan Perdana at Kampung Pintasan Tiris here recently.
Talking on development, Awang Tengah said the state government always ensured that the voice of every race is heard.
“We can see this as evidenced by the appointment of Bekenu assemblywoman Rosey Yunus and Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat, who are also attending this event today.
“Both will surely bring the Kedayan voice to the top leadership of the state,” he added.
During the dinner, guests were entertained with Kedayan cultural performances as well as the Kapala Kapooa competition.
Also present was Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni.
