KUCHING: The severe damage caused by the flood in Kota Samarahan has brought emotional distress to the affected families.

This is especially so for the parents, who have to deal with the destruction of their homes and their furnishings, which have been ravaged by the waters.

Asmara Tupek, a resident of Kota Samarahan, said that her entire family just moved into a new house and that they had plans to celebrate the New Year together.

“I am sad that the house that I just moved into has experienced flooding.

“It is my first time experiencing floods, and it was not a great experience for my family and me,” said the 21-year-old to the New Sarawak Tribune today.

Asmara is one of four people in her family who have moved to the Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Baru temporary relief centre (PPS) in Kota Samarahan.

She later expressed her thanks for the PPS amenities, saying that they had made it possible for her family to live comfortably while the water problems subsided.

Meanwhile, Wan Busman, who lives approximately five minutes away from the PPS, said his main worry is that he won’t be able to work and provide for his family.

The 32-year-old man, who supports a family of five, claimed that the flood damaged his family’s belongings.

“Some of us depend heavily on the weather because we are fishermen.

“The moment we saw the waters come in, we knew immediately that we would be affected (by the flood),” he said.

Wan continued by saying that he always celebrates the New Year with his extended families, but this year there would be no celebration because they are so severely affected by the flood.
