KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap remains steadfast in his commitment to promoting unity through education and infrastructure development.

He said Sarawak is a multicultural and multireligious society, highlighting that education is important in promoting unity within the society.

As such, he urged Sarawakians to lead by example, championing harmony.

“Education plays a very important role in promoting unity in such a diverse setting and relies on our collective effort to understand, respect, and celebrate these differences, viewing them as opportunities for enrichment rather than division.

“Schools serve as the breeding grounds for the next generation of Sarawakians, who should carry forth the torch of unity and respect.

“Sarawakians must and can set an example for the whole of Malaysia through nurturing and maintaining our current environment of mutual respect, encouraging dialogue, and fostering a socially inclusive identity, which is laid down clearly under Post-Covid Development Strategies (PCDS) 2030,” he said in a statement.

In light of recent events characterised by divisive rhetoric in the Peninsular, Yap asserted that Sarawakians need to lead by example in promoting harmony and political stability.

He expressed hope that politicians across the nation would prioritise the wellbeing of citizens over political expediency, steering away from divisive tactics that could exacerbate social divides.

“Politics should be a venue of healing through consultation, compromise, and consensus where societal problems are not aggravated but are resolved amicably.”

Earlier, Yap, alongside officers from the Public Works Department (JKR), embarked on a visit to SK Sungai Stutong to oversee the implementation of a RM200,000 Rural Transformation Project (RTP) aimed at constructing its new open hall.

He said SK Sungai Stutong has long grappled with the absence of a dedicated assembly area, forcing students and teachers to conduct activities amid unpredictable weather conditions.

Towards this end, Yap urged JKR officers to engage with school representatives to gather input and suggestions, facilitating the swift formulation of the scope of work and bill of quantities for the new facility.
