KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital has achieved a significant milestone by introducing its Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA), becoming the first hospital in Borneo to own such advanced technology.

The arrival of ROSA on today (Aug 10) marks the hospital’s commitment to investing in state-of-the-art smart hospital technology to enhance patient care and precision medicine.

ROSA is specifically designed to assist specially-trained surgeons in customising the placement of knee implants for patients undergoing Total Knee Replacement (TKR) procedures.

This technology enhances the precision and accuracy of the implant placement, leading to reduced surgical risks, shorter recovery times, and improved long-term outcomes.

Resident consultant orthopaedic surgeon Dr Lee Woo Guan stated that the hospital’s first surgery using ROSA is scheduled for two weeks from now, likely at the end of August.

“With ROSA, we can perform TKR with a better recovery, and most important, the alignment of the implant can go beyond 25 years,” he said.

KPJ Kuching general manager Nurhazimah Mahat underlined the significance of ROSA in orthopaedic surgeries conducted by Dr Lee.

She explained that Dr Lee’s extensive experience, which includes over 300 joint replacement cases annually, makes him well-equipped to handle the ROSA technology for complex surgeries.

KPJ Kuching is offering a promotional discount of RM300 per admission for surgeries performed with ROSA until December of this year.

“The estimated cost for a TKR using ROSA is approximately RM36,000 for one leg, while both legs would cost about RM70,000.

“For comparison, traditional surgery procedures without ROSA technology range from around RM20,000 to RM26,000 for one leg, and up to RM50,000 for both legs, depending on the type of implant used,” Nurhazimah explained.

The KPJ Kuching division of KPJ Healthcare Berhad has been offering orthopaedic services since 2005, encompassing diagnosis, care, and treatment for musculoskeletal problems.

The hospital’s orthopaedic specialists provide various treatments, including fracture management, joint replacement, arthroscopy, sports medicine, spine surgery, and therapies for bones, joints, and muscles.
