KUCHING: Layer cakes are usually served during special events or celebrations in Sarawak.
The uniqueness of the layer cake has become one of the attractions in Sarawak to be used as souvenirs for tourists from outside the state.
Layer cakes also have a variety of flavours, colours and patterns. In fact, Sarawak layer cake is also modernised with more options according to the taste of the community.
One of Sarawak layer cake entrepreneurs Noor Rania Aina Nganyup, 30, uses high quality butter to maintain the quality of her layer cake creations.
According to Noor Rania, she runs a sales business in her own home which is located outside the Kuching area, the distance from Kuching to Kampung Sg. Resit is 43 kilometres.
She started her business from 2021 after she resigned as an administrative clerk at a company in April that year and was looking for an idea to start a layer cake business.
Noor Rania also attended the first premium layer cake class followed by a budget layer cake class.
“I operate my business making layer cakes from 8 am to 9 am,” she explained to the New Sarawak Tribune.
According to her, for now, she does not have an assistant to help manage her business.
“Most of my customers don’t only book during Hari Raya, but customers of other ethnicities also book during their celebrations,” she said.
As such, Noor Rania’s layer cake orders are accepted for festival orders in Sarawak such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Gawai and Christmas.
She promotes her business through WhatsApp and Facebook only. Sometimes her customers walk in to the house.
“The challenge in the preparation of sales materials during the COVID-19 season is that the price of goods has suddenly risen. I also had to raise the cost of layer cakes at a reasonable price so that my customers can also buy layer cakes made by me,” she said.
The minimum price of her premium layer cake starts from RM180 to RM200 while the price of super-moist budget layer cake is from RM70 to RM100.
“Apart from making layer cakes, I also drop off and pick up primary and secondary school children. I also help my mother takes care of my late father’s grocery store,” she said.
Those who never give up giving encouragement to her throughout her business venture are her husband, family, friends and regular customers.
“I intend to open my own bakery in the future, “Business ladder of success”.
“My message to those who are small traders out there, we must think positively and not easily lose hope with what we have done. We must also obtain knowledge from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as attending business management courses so that we know more on marketing of products.
