KUCHING: The Sarawak government is planning to conduct research on the safety requirements for longhouses as part of the upcoming amendments to the Sarawak Building Ordinance.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said that the entire ordinance is currently being reviewed and is undergoing extensive consultations with experts before the proposed amendments can be implemented.

“Under the Sarawak Building Ordinance, all these matters have been thoroughly examined,” said Dr Sim, who serves as the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government.

“As a result, we are now engaging in extensive consultations with experts, considering that the construction of houses requires professional input.

“At present, the Sarawak State Attorney General (SAG) is finalising the amendments to ensure they align with federal laws and other legislation without any conflicts.”

Dr Sim said this to reporters at a hotel after attending the Malaysian Buddhist Association’s gathering, held in conjunction with Buddha’s birthday celebration today (June 3).
