KUCHING: The Mahzab As-Syafi’I, established since the advent of Islam to the archipelago around the 13th century AD, remains relevant today in addressing legal issues arising in the society.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said its methodology of wasatiyyah (moderation) matched the multi-racial and religious situation and community in Sarawak.

He said sticking with one faction without marginalising the views of other mazhabs in legal matters could strengthen unity and eventually lead to the development of the society.

“The clear legal guidance with high level discipline and wisdom approach of Mazhab As- Syafi’i stays pertinent and accepted till this day,” he said.

Abang Johari was speaking at the opening of the Imam As-Syafi’i International Conference, held in conjunction with Sarawak’s 60 years of Independence in Malaysia.

The conference was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

Themed “Sustainability of Fiqh As-Syafi’i in Driving of The Prosperity of The Ummah”, it was jointly organised by Sarawak Mufti Department and Academy of Islamic Studies of the University of Malaya.
While expressing his gratitude that Sarawak would be celebrating its 60 years of Independence in Malaysia this year, he was grateful the people in Sarawak could live in peace and harmony for decades.

“Always appreciate unity and tolerance and practise religion accurately so that our beloved Sarawak will remain prosperous, advanced and blessed by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala,” he said.
