KUCHING: Wearing school uniforms gives students a sense of identity which will in turn inculcate good values in them.

Sarawak Teachers Union president Kullin Djayang likened it to instilling discipline in them from a young age, saying they will as a result grow up being obedient to rules and laws and love the country.

“This is because school uniforms are like an internal discipline with high values and ethics,” he said in a statement.

For most people in the community, this might be somewhat a conservative stance in comparison to the situation in developed countries, he said.

“But we must also consider how progressive the mentality of our society is, especially our students, compared to theirs. Therefore, we should further embrace our cultural norms first to shape the younger generation with a global mentality,” he added.

Towards this end he called on the government to maintain the practice of having students wear school uniforms, except for when they are involved in co-curricular activities.
