Majority of dog-bite cases in Sibu attributed to pet owners

SIBU: Seventy-six per cent of the 604 individuals reported with dog-bite cases from January to September this year were bitten by their own pet dogs.

According to statistics obtained from the Sibu Health Department and shared by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), the highest rate of attacks was from the owners’ own pet dogs with 459 cases.

“For Week 1 to Week 43 of this year, a total of 459 dog-bite cases were recorded from pet dog owners, while stray dog bites were observed in 145 cases,” said the statement yesterday (Nov 1).

The highest number of dog-bite cases (for both pets and strays), was reported in Ulu Sungai Merah with 75 cases.

This was followed by 40 cases each in Tong Sang and Tiong Hua; Rejang Park (39); Farley (33); Sukun / Lada (31); and Pedada (30).

Other areas were Permai with 29 cases; Indah/Aup (23); Diong Kik (21); Apollo/Deshon (20); Wong King Huo (19); Sentosa (18); Tuanku Abdul Rahman (17); and Jeriah (16).

Meanwhile, 15 dog-bite cases reported in Ding Lik Kong; Mantis, Poh Yew, Teku, Pulau Li Hua – with 14 cases each; Damai, Bukit Lima (13); and Delta, Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce – with 11 cases each.

The areas with below ten dog-bite cases were Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg with 9 cases; Bahagia Jaya (6); Kwong Ann, Awang Ramli Amit, Sg. Antu, Pusat Bandar- with 4 cases each; and Kampung Dato (3).
