KUCHING: The police here arrested a guy for allegedly assaulting another man who was assisting an accident victim along Jalan Astana here, on Wednesday.

The incident went viral on social media after a 20-second video showing the victim suffering injuries as a result of being beaten at a fatal accident scene between a lorry and a motorcycle.

According to Kuching OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah in a statement today, the incident was caused by a misunderstanding while the victim was attempting to provide first treatment to the motorcyclist.

“The suspect had mistaken the victim as the lorry driver and beat him with a cane.

“After the victim was admitted to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment, his family lodged a police report,” he said.

Following that, a D9 police team from Kuching Criminal Investigation Division (CID) arrested the 42-year-old suspect at Kampung Astana Lot around 11.30am yesterday.

The cane alleged to have been used by the suspect during the incident was also seized.
