Man caught with drugs worth RM3.5 mln

KUCHING: Police picked up a 37-year old man for possessing 35,486 grams of syabu stored in Chinese tea packets worth RM3.5 million in two raids on Wednesday (Mar 8).

The drugs were intended to be distributed to 177,430 drug users.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the first raid was at the suspect’s parking compound and the seond at his apartment in Jalan Stutong Baru.

“Inside the car, we found 12 packets of drugs weighing around 12,447 grams, believed to be syabu.

“The suspect led us to his apartment, and we found 22 packets of drugs weighing around 22,676 grams and crystalline substances weighing around 363 grams believed to be syabu,” he told a press conference at the Sarawak Contingent headquarters (IPK) today.

The suspect was under surveillance since mid-2021when the drugs were sent through courier services by a syndicate based in Malaya. The suspect would then sell it to the local community.

Mohd Azman said the drugs which were bought in large amounts by the suspect cost RM1.26 million for a street value of RM3.5 million in Sarawak.

“A drug test on the suspect tested him positive for ketamine and benzo.

“The suspect also has two past criminal records under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and seven records under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said.

The suspect is currently remanded under the Magistrate Court for seven days from Mar 9 to 15.
