KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to three years in prison by the Sessions Court today (Dec 15) for setting fire to a main electricity meter in a flat at Taman Sepakat Jaya, here.

Bangau, 30, from Kampung Tapang Maong, Balai Ringin, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 435 of the Penal Code.

Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman ordered the accused to serve his prison sentence starting from the date of his arrest on Sunday (Dec 11).

According to the charge, he deliberately committed the offence with the intention of causing damage to a main electricity meter resulting in a loss of RM1,000.

The offence was committed at a flat building in Taman Sepakat Jaya, Demak Laut, at about 3am, on Dec 11.

According to the facts of the case, at the time of the incident, the complainant was a neighbour who had just returned from work and saw a man known as Bangau, with no cloth, burning the main electricity meter under the stairs of the flat building.

The complainant then proceeded to inform her husband to put out the fire. The complainant made a police report for further action and investigation.

Police managed to arrest the accused around 4pm on the same day of the incident.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
