Man jailed for threatening sibling over money

KUCHING: A 41-year-old man was sentenced to five months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court on Monday (Feb 5) for threatening to break his brother’s car window after a dispute over money.


Roland Jayis pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which pertains to making criminal threats. The charge was read out by an interpreter before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.


The incident took place at their residence in Taman Shing Yu, Jalan Batu Kawa, around 12.30pm on Oct 9, 2023.


According to the prosecution, Roland deliberately uttered threats towards his 44-year-old brother during the altercation.


The court heard that Roland’s outburst occurred due to a disagreement over money, during which he threatened to break his brother’s car window if his demands were not met.


Additionally, the complainant discovered that Roland was involved in drug-related activities and subsequently lodged a police report.


Following the report, Roland was arrested at his residence around 9.45am the following day, Oct 13, 2023.
Prosecuting officer Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang handled the case, while Roland was not represented by legal counsel.
