KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) strives to promote positive wellbeing and beneficial practices within the people of Kuching, creating a more developed and forward-thinking local community.

“Projects accomplished by MBKS include clean and beautiful parks and gardens,” MBKS mayor Datuk James Chan said in his speech at the 31st Kuching City commemoration day celebration at Majma’ Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Hall at Jalan P Ramlee here yesterday.

He highlighted that the proper maintenance and safety of such parks had encouraged more members of the public to make use of these public facilities for recreational activities and exercise, in turn improving their overall wellbeing.

In addition, he stressed that preserving the upkeep of these landscapes was important to leave a good impression upon tourists in Kuching.

“Non-governmental organisations (NGO) and charitable bodies can also use the surrounding areas of MBKS buildings for fundraising and health-related activities, free-of-charge,” Chan added.
He encouraged collaborations with reputable NGOs, as such symbiotic relations could generate guidance for the community to lead healthier lifestyles.

Another positive habit that is cultivated by MBKS is sustainable waste management, such as composting methods for
households.

“We have composting centres to reduce and manage the volume of waste, which is expected to increase as population growth increases and could become a financial burden for the council and also our people in the near future,” Chan stated, urging the public to work hand-in-hand with the relevant authorities to prevent this undesirable result via good waste management programmes.

By applying a lean management strategic style, MBKS has been able to continuously improve its services and processes over time, minimising the wastage of time, money and effort, and instead promoting efficiency and quality, as its mayor said: “To serve the people better.”

In addition, Chan proudly announced that MBKS had been consistently receiving a clean federal audit clearance for a number of years, as well as properly managing funds to ensure effective resource usage to maximise gains for the people.

As an example, he elaborated: “Despite the lack of federal funding for flood mitigation projects, MBKS was able to fully utilise the Marris Fund to repair infrastructure defects in drains and roads, which has alleviated flash floods at certain problematic areas.”

Also present at the celebration were Abang Johari’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, Rural Electricity Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi; Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Assistant Minister Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, DBKU Mayor Datuk Abdul Wahap Abang Julai along with his wife Datin Dayang Horiah Datuk Seri Abang Zainuddin, and DBKU director Dr Morshidi Ahmad.
