KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has urged politicians to focus on the city’s broader urban planning needs rather than a single durian stall issue that impacts only a few citizens.

“These vendors with daily permits have indeed been very lucky for 10 years to have a prime spot in the centre of the city, right next door to one of our major tourist attractions, all to themselves.

“As far as I am aware, only a single durian seller has been given free rein to occupy a space that should be available for parking by multiple citizens during the day and could be available for multiple vendors at night, enlivening the city for all.

“These vendors have been fortunate for a decade to occupy a prime spot in the city centre, adjacent to a major tourism attraction. This space could be better utilised for parking during the day and multiple vendors at night,” said Wee.

He noted that MBKS’ decision to relocate the stall was made after extensive consideration and engagement over six months.

Contrary to claims, he said, MBKS officers did not dismantle the stall’s sun tents, and the stall remains operational.

He highlighted that MBKS’ people-friendly approach aims to balance individual needs with community benefits.

Despite alternative venues offered, the vendor has resisted relocation, choosing instead to seek political support.

The area has evolved significantly over the past decade, with increased traffic and a need for better parking solutions. The current setup of the durian stall, lacking proper facilities and hygiene standards, is no longer suitable.

MBKS has a concept plan approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to enhance local markets and promote Kuching as a Creative City of Gastronomy.

This plan requires the space currently occupied by the durian stall to benefit the wider community.

Wee concluded by stating that the issue should not dominate the State Legislature’s agenda and that MBKS will continue to work towards upgrading the area for the benefit of all residents.
