MIRI: Miri Mayor Adam Yii is hoping that the Public Works Department (PWD) will continue providing grass cutting services in areas under its (PWD) jurisdiction.

“After all, we Sarawakians also pay taxes,” he said.

Yii made this comment after holding Miri City Council (MCC) meet-the-people session yesterday morning at Miri Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) along Jalan Raja.

He hoped that the situation could return to normal.

“I was informed that some areas under PWD’s jurisdiction, they have started doing some grass cutting,” Yii said.

However, MCC has not received any confirmation on the matter, the mayor stated.

“But we are glad that PWD is resuming its normal operation,” he said.

Yii also expressed his concern for the year 2019, that if the situation prolongs, then they (MCC) will have a dialogue session with PWD.

Last year Works Minister Baru Bian announced that there was no budget from the federal government for the PWD to continue providing maintenance works along protocol roads, for the months of November and December.

On another matter, Yii also said that MCC had issued warning letters to some appointed contractors for failing to collect garbage.

“We have received complaints from residents on garbage being not collected over the weekend from their residential areas (during the recent festive season),” he said.

MCC has appointed 10 contractors for the purpose whereby they were assigned into 10 respective collecting zones.

“Most of the contractors were giving excuses of festive season and staff on leave, and we (MCC) cannot accept these excuses,”he stressed.

He said, contractors must be proactive to fix the situation.
