Various measures have been taken by the Sarawak government, Sarawak Forest Department and other relevant agencies to ensure plantation activities undertaken by Radiant Lagoon SdnBhd do not affect the status of Mulu National Park as a Unesco Heritage Site.

Assistant Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said among the measures taken was to conduct continuous monitoring activities to ensure there were no intrusion activities within the vicinity of the park.

He said monitoring activities were carried out through air and ground surveillance by the Sarawak Forest Department and Sarawak Forestry Corporation Sdn Bhd.

Len Talif was responding to a question by See Chee How (PKR-Batu Lintang) on what safeguards were in place to ensure logging and plantation activities did not breach the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Convention 1972.

“The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) also controls and ensures mitigation measures are taken against any negative impacts that might affect the park’s ecosystem,” he said.

He added the buffer zone of not less than 200 metres from the boundary of Mulu National Park had been set to ensure the integrity of the national park was protected from any disruption and invasion.

“The Forest Department will also prepare a report every two years to ensure the status of the park and their habitats within the vicinity of the park are fully protected and preserve.”
