SIBU: A mechanic was killed when a vehicle he was driving crashed into a ditch at Retus Farm, Jalan Rantau Panjang near here on Saturday afternoon.
The victim, identified as Chew Chee Hong, 23, was driving a Toyota Hilux from the direction of Retus Farm police post to the Retus plant when the accident occurred at 4.50pm.
Sibu district deputy police chief, Wong Chee Keong, said the victim lost control of the vehicle and plunged into the watery ditch.
“We received a call from the manager of Retus Farm stating that a vehicle had crashed into the ditch at 4.50pm,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Police later called the Fire and Rescue Department which sent firemen to retrieve the victim from inside the vehicle.
The body of the victim was sent to Sibu Hospital for an autopsy before family members claimed it.
Wong said the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
