KUCHING: A coordination meeting will be held soon among various federal ministries and agencies to expedite the introduction of carbon-related legislation in Malaysia.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof the meeting is expected to be held after the Hari Raya celebration.

“This matter has been discussed at the National Energy Council level, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim agreed to expedite the process.

“We will convene a coordination meeting among various federal ministries and agencies to expedite the introduction of legislation related not only to renewable energy but importantly to carbon, including carbon trading, carbon credits, carbon storage, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS),” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after attending the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg Hari Raya open house at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today (Apr 10).

Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said his ministry would cooperate and find ways to assist and support Sarawak in renewable energy generation and carbon monitoring.

“This is because Sarawak is ready in terms of legislation, regulations, and systems related to carbon monitoring.

“That’s why we’re calling for a meeting so that we can coordinate and make the laws introduced in Sarawak the basis for us to develop laws at the national level.

“That’s what we want to develop, and if we can expedite it, then the process for carbon credits, carbon trading, and carbon storage can proceed,” he said.
