SIBU: Matu, Daro and Pulau Bruit Dictionary Development will host Melanau Language Seminars and Dictionary Entry Workshops from Jan 25 to 27 at Hotel Samudra in Kuching.

Its chairman Dr Raduan Serap said the objective is to produce a Melanau dictionary of Matu, Daro and Pulau Bruit.

The seminar will be held on the first day (Jan 25) while the workshop will be on the second and third days (Jan 26 and 27).

Melanaus from Matu, Daro and Pulau Bruit are welcome to participate in the programme.

Seats are limited, so those who are interested are advised to contact the organisers immediately, according to Dr Raduan in a media statement yesterday.

He said participants in the workshops are welcome on the second and third days as they will be involved directly in the preparation of the dictionary entries.

They will be involved as word collectors and some will become testers during the ensuing workshops.

Earlier, Raduan disclosed that Pulau Bruit Graduate Organisation (PGPB), Matu Graduate Association and Sarikei Melanau Association were the ones that initiated the production of the Melanau dictionary of Matu, Daro and Pulau Bruit.

“After several discussions, a working committee was established in 2017,” he said.

“Discussions were held with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Sarawak to gain some insight and seek cooperation in order to know how to follow the guidelines and methodology in the making of the dictionary.”

In addition, the committee also sought the cooperation of the Faculty of Language and Communication of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

On December 14 last year, Pulau Bruit Graduate Organisation (PGPB), Matu Graduate Association and the Sarikei Melanau Association formed a construction committee with the cooperation of Unimas’ Faculty of Language and Communication.

Raduan can be contacted at 014-6776766 while Tambi can be contacted at 019-5716819.

The due date for making requests to participate is Jan 18.
