KUCHING: The location selection process for the cascading dam development will prioritise environmental preservation, according to Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.

During the launch of the ministry’s Annual Plan 2024 here on Tuesday (Jan 30), the Minister for Utility and Telecommunication stressed the importance of ensuring the surrounding environment remains protected, particularly in rural areas potentially affected by the project.

“We will actively engage with local leaders in the identified areas for the cascading dam development. Their full cooperation is crucial to the success of this project.”

Reflecting on past experiences, he noted the need to discern between stakeholders who support and oppose the project.

Julaihi urged Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to devise a comprehensive development plan, including an actionable framework.

He called for collaboration among the ministry, assemblymen, local leaders, and SEB to ensure clear communication and understanding of the project’s objectives.

Furthermore, he urged staff from the ministry’s agencies to effectively disseminate information to rural communities to prevent misunderstandings and misinterpretations by third parties.
