KUCHING: Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to remain vigilant as the flood season intensifies.

In urging this, Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah stressed the importance of consolidating important documents in preparation for possible relocation to temporary relief centres (PPS) in the event of flash floods.

“Certainly, in the event of an evacuation order to relocate to the PPS, please adhere to it, as your safety is our utmost priority,” she said.

She said this when speaking to reporters after attending the Ministry’s Excellence Service Awards at a renowned hotel here last night (Feb 16).

Fatimah’s remarks come in response to a series of flash flood incidents triggered by an overnight downpour in various areas of Kuching, Bau, and Batu Kawa yesterday.

She also highlighted the need for special attention to be given to children, especially those with disabilities, to ensure their safety during evacuation procedures.

“Most importantly, please evacuate to the designated PPS provided by authorities. Unfortunately, there have been cases where residents relocated to unauthorised PPS locations.

“We want to avoid such occurrences this time, so please relocate to the PPS locations specified by us,” she added.

Earlier, it was reported that three PPSs have been set up to accommodate affected individuals, with two in Kuching and one in Bau.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) also disclosed that as of 2pm yesterday, PPS Dewan R-Piang in Kampung Sinar Budi had already provided assistance to 29 victims from seven families since its opening at 11.15am.
