KUCHING: The Ministry of Communications is studying the usage of satellites as towers to provide phone coverage.

Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil  said this technology does not require the construction of any telecommunications tower and is compatible to get 100 per cent coverage in populated areas.

“This satellite will be used as a tower to reach telecommunication coverage without the need for a satellite type phone. If it is successfully implemented in Malaysia, God willing there will be coverage anywhere including in the middle of the sea, on mountains and so on.

“However, this coverage can only support phone call services, sending messages, WhatsApp and for emergency purposes only. Applications such as TikTok cannot be used,” he said.

He said this during his address at a casual meeting with the Madani Kuching Community here on Sunday (May 26).

Fahmi said this technology is very new and that there are only three companies that can implement this initiative globally.
