KUCHING: The Ministry of Education must be sensitive to the current issues and challenges encountered by the country and ensure that the syllabus and curriculum evolve with time and updated accordingly and promptly.

“This is in order to educate and produce our future generations of high quality, not only in terms of knowledge but also of social responsibilities,” said Datuk Jonathan Chai, president of the Association of the Boards of Management of Aided Chinese Primary Schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian.

In order to educate and produce the future generations of high quality, he opined that, it should not only be in terms of knowledge but also of social responsibilities.

“Undoubtedly, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) is a hot topic now but sadly, quite a lot of people including teachers don’t even have a clue on the issue.

“It takes some collective efforts from various stakeholders to promote and create awareness of this concept and certainly, it will be very helpful if we could start such an endeavour from the schools.

“On that note, we must ensure that the education development in Sarawak remains pragmatic, dynamic and relevant with time,” he said when contacted today (23 June).

Chai said the adoption and implementation of ESG in every sector of the economy and every aspect of the state’s development would be crucial to enable Sarawak to achieve a developed state with high income economy as envisaged in the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS).

Teachers must equip themselves so that they can facilitate their students’ learning with an understanding and awareness of knowledge and information relevant to their times.

On Monday, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said school teachers must inculcate values that are in line with the principles of ESG among students to produce a society that is sensitive to environmental issues like global climate change.

This move, he said, would also be in line with the demands of the Malaysia Madani concept, in addition to enabling teachers to raise the dignity of the state and lead it to achieve developed status by 2030.
