MIRI: The Miri Chinese New Year bazaar was described as successful as it has cemented its place as a significant event for both the local community and visitors.
In stressing this, Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang thanked the state’s Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Ministry for their unrelenting support.
“Through their (the Ministry’s) generous contributions, we are able to elevate the Miri Gong Xi Bazaar to new heights, making it a significant event not only for our local community but also for visitors from afar.
“The Ministry’s commitment to cultural and community events like ours is invaluable in promoting Sarawak’s rich traditions and heritage on a global stage,” Yii said on Saturday (Feb 3) night at the launch of the bazaar.
The event was graced by Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Yii said the event, in line with the Lunar New Year celebration was also in tandem with the broader vision for Miri’s transformation as a green, smart, and most liveable international resort city.
“The Miri Gong Xi Bazaar showcased our commitment to this vision, offering a glimpse into the vibrant culture, beautiful environment, and innovative spirit that define Miri,” Yii said.
He added that the council is positioning community events such as the Miri Gong Xi Bazaar as a key strategy towards Miri’s urban development plan.
“Not only does it provide an economic boost to our local businesses and artisans, but it also puts Miri on the map as a destination for cultural tourism.
“We are proud to offer a unique experience that combines traditional festivities with modern conveniences, set against the backdrop of our stunning natural landscapes,” he said.
Yii who is also Pujut assemblyman said the event also featured the application of eco-friendly practices and smart technologies to enhance visitor experience.
“This underlines the city’s dedication to sustainability and innovation; we are demonstrating Miri’s capacity to be a leader in sustainable urban development.
“It is our hope that through initiatives like the Miri Gong Xi Bazaar, we can inspire other cities and communities to embrace green and smart solutions that benefit both people and the planet,” he said.
The Miri Gong Xi Bazaar event was jointly organised by the Miri City Council in collaboration with the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI). It has evolved significantly since its inception in 2000.
This year, the organisers allocated 40 percent of the stalls to Bumiputera hawkers, emphasising their commitment to racial harmony and inclusivity while offering a taste of the myriad cultures of Mirians.
Over the next seven days, Jalan Kingsway and High Street will come alive with the glow of red lanterns, the sounds of cultural performances, and the aromas of traditional delicacies.
During that period, 26 organisations will participate in special events such as Chinese New Year Run 2024 and the Cheongsam Queen Competition.
Also present during the event were Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew; Councillor Jeffery Phang who was representing Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin; Sarawak Tourism Board chairman and Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau and MCCCI chairman Ling Chiong Sing.
