KUCHING: The free school bus service programme to be launched in April will include a tracking system via smartphone application.

Yayasan Sarawak director Azmi Bujang said that tracking devices would be installed in every school bus under the programme.

“We can monitor the school buses through our smartphones. Through the application, we will be able to know the location of the bus as well as the traffic conditions of the routes,” he said during the Free School Bus Programme Briefing at Yayasan Sarawak here yesterday.

Thus, he said the bus association as the service provider would be able to track these buses’ movement and see if they took shortcuts.

During his briefing, he said that 18 zones would be covered by the free school bus service, including the city centre, Satok, Matang, Pending, Buntal, Jalan Astana, Desa Wira, Tabuan, Bako, and so on.

“This is the first trial, so there are zones that we have not covered yet,” Azmi explained.

Three periods of operating hours have been established for the programme: from 5.30 to 7 am, from 11.30 am to 2.30 pm, and from 5 to 7 pm.

According to him, the routes had been tested by the bus association and adjusted accordingly.

He said that they were in the final stages of getting the programme up and running.
