More assets seized as cops go after syndicates

KUCHING: More assets linked to drug trafficking have been seized this year as police ramp up efforts to crush drug syndicates in the state.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Sapri said drug syndicate assets worth RM3.7 million had been seized up to June 2023 compared to RM1.7 million over the same period last year.

It accounted for an increase of 54 per cent, he said, adding that more suspects had also been arrested for involvement in drug cases.

A total of 5,665 people were arrested during the first six months of this year compared to 4,576 arrests during the same period last year.

At a press conference here Wednesday, Azman said there was an increase of 1,089 arrests which translates to 24 per cent more.

“The total worth of drugs confiscated also showed an increase of RM118.9 million or 1,355 per cent this year compared to 2022.

“The total amount of drugs confiscated in the same period of 2022 and 2023 can be used by a total of 2,808,514 addicts,” he said.

He also revealed that 3,411 cases out of 5,419 investigation papers that had been opened until June 2023 have been referred to court, compared to 2,650 cases out of 4,159 investigation papers during the same period in 2022.
