KUCHING: Parents are advised to take extra precautions not to expose their young children to any risk of infection, including Covid-19.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said this includes not taking children out to public areas like shopping malls or any unnecessary gatherings during the conditional movement control order (CMCO) period.

“Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah stated that even though there are no deaths among children due to disease so far, nor have there been any severe cases, but the risk of infants and children getting infected with Covid-19 is high, as are the elderly,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

He said this could also be because the immune system of younger children is weaker, putting them at risk of the disease.

“Based on a study in the United Kingdom, Covid-19 may not just affect children’s lungs, but they may also develop symptoms of Kawasaki disease which causes inflammation of the blood vessels,” he said, adding that the Kawasaki disease can affect the function of the heart muscle or the heart valves.

He said doctors and scientists are still learning more of this new disease, including how the virus can behave in children, which may not be the same with adults.

“Just yesterday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) released a brief of rare illnesses in children that are possibly linked to Covid-19. That is why I believe extra precautions should be taken when it comes to our children.

“This does not only include not bringing them out unnecessarily, but also for parents returning from outside to their homes to take all necessary precautions, including taking a shower first or sanitising their hands before interacting with children,” Dr Yii pointed out.

He said adults must educate children about the importance of practising good personal hygiene such as washing their hands, keeping clean, and always wearing their face masks if they really need to be out in public, especially in crowded areas.
