SIBU: The Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) has marked a new milestone of growth and transformation with a ground-breaking ceremony of a new 4.5-storey building on Lot 2539, Jalan Lily here yesterday.

Speaking to reporters after the ground-breaking ceremony, its principal Hii King Kai said the whole project would cost about RM8 million.

“The new building will consist of classrooms, student activity area, discussion room and library.

“After we move over the library to the new building, our existing library will be turned into an IT Hub. So that students can do more research and development which is related to IT development.

“The whole project would take about 14 months to complete and we expect this would be ready around Chinese New Year of 2020,” he said.

He explained that the construction work of the new building will start immediately.

“We start the construction work immediately because we hope to finish the piling work before the start of the new semester to minimise the noise which will cause the disturbance on ongoing classes,” he added.

On the construction of new building, Hii said the new building will accommodate the increasing number of MPI’s student.

“The old building which was built in 1971 cannot accommodate the increasing number of student anymore and we need more space because the number of student has reached 1,000,” he said.

He added that MPI would also introduce new programmes such as Taxation, Finance and Investment, Social Work and Inclusive Education.

“There are many new programmes coming and we don’t have enough space. We hope with the construction of the new building, it would solve the matter,” he said.
