KUCHING: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) is once again appealing to the public, be they inside or outside Kota Samarahan, to keep the area clean.
“Do not throw empty plastic bottles and plastic waste on the Samarahan roads. Also, keep all public toilets neat and clean at all times,” urged MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos at the MPKS ‘World Environmental Health Day’ celebration yesterday.
“MPKS is totally fed up with seeing empty plastic bottles, plastic waste and other rubbish on the roadsides in Kota Samarahan.”
He added that the toilets at most coffee shops and cafes were dirty and soon they would have no choice but to fine the culprits.
According to Minos, MPKS’ past campaigns on cleanliness and good health appeared to have fallen on deaf ears.
“We will soon go punitive. What choice do we have? We will follow Singapore’s style.”
He stressed that these bad habits must go.
“Be like the Japanese who I recently saw keep their public and private toilets super clean and with no waste and rubbish on their roads, streets, and drains.
“Why can we not be like them and adopt their superb culture?” he lamented.
Minos remains optimistic, however, believing that it is never too late. He revealed that MPKS will continue to hold talks at various locations and forums to educate the people of Kota Samarahan to adopt a culture of cleanliness and good health.
“The campaign will go on. We will do it. Samarahan must be neat and clean,” he emphasised, undeterred. He added that this is for the good of everyone and also to keep up the good name and reputation of the area.
He remarked that everyone must be involved and they must be serious about this matter. “It cannot be a council’s job alone,” he said.
Minos stated that he wanted others to say that Kota Samarahan is the ‘cleanest and best place around in Sarawak’.
“We do not want anything
short of this. We can do it if we
have a new culture of cleanliness and respect for the environment,” he remarked.
