KOTA PADAWAN: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and The Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sarawak Branch yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aims to strengthen and further develop cooperation in enhancing better understanding of the shared professional advice and guidance of MPP and IEM (Sarawak Branch).
The MoU also aims to strengthen and develop friendly relations, reinforced by the establishment of exchanges and cooperation as well as those common interests that would benefit both parties.
Both parties, subject to the terms of the MoU, also agreed to promote public awareness of the engineering aspects and safety regulations amongst the residents of MPP.
For the purpose of promoting and facilitating such cooperation, both parties have agreed to work together to conduct joint research projects, educational exchanges and all other educational programmes and activities in order to enhance better understanding of the shared knowledge within both parties.
Both parties also agreed to inform each other of major events and activities and exchange information on matters of mutual interest; and whenever possible and when the situation permits, to jointly plan and organise engineering talks, seminars or conferences; to disseminate professional and general information of the other party to its respective stakeholders to ensure that proper and correct information is being delivered to the general public; and also to provide professional advice and support whenever possible and requested upon, and/or whenever the need arise or whenever being referred to by the party concerned.
Prior to implementing or undertaking any programme proposed, both parties shall first discuss and mutually agree upon the financial terms and obligations arising from such understanding. The programmme shall only be implemented and /or undertaken after both parties have mutually agreed on such terms.
Signing the Mou on behalf of MPP was it chairman Ir. Lo Khere Chiang and MPP acting secretary Elizabeth Loh, while IEM Sarawak Branch was represented by its chairman Ir. Vincent Tang Chok Khing and IEM Sarawak’s honorary secretary Ir. Tan Joo Kok.
Lo said MPP is the first council in Sarawak to sign a MoU with IEM Sarawak Branch. This is a memorandum of understanding whereby IEM Sarawak Branch will be contributing through their CSR to assist the council to provide technical expertise and advice when required.
“We have legal advisors and legal opinion today in this council; we also have the Institution of Engineers helping us out by providing us technical advice. I think this is very good and I would like to congratulate IEM Sarawak Branch and its chairman Ir Vincent Tang for leading its IEM members into this very noble and very encouraging step forwards,” the MPP chief said.
Lo said he is sure IEM Sarawak under the leadership of Tang will not just stop with Padawan Municipal Council but other councils throughout the state, other organisations throughout the state would be pleased to have IEM as advisors.
To build a country and state, he said, required engineers, and engineers are supposed to solve problems, meet with problems and face problems head on and are supposed to find a solution around the problem and to solve it.
“I am sure this council will appreciate the advice that you are going to give us,” he said.
Tang said there are 15 disciplines in engineers and IEM Sarawak Branch has all the 15 disciplines.
“We are here to share knowledge, and we want to participate in the policy making on the technical views so that we are all relevant as engineers. The purpose is strictly on knowledge sharing.
“We want to let the public know that we are relevant. We are here with the purpose to assist, not otherwise,” he said.
Also present to witness the signing of the MoU at MPP here yesterday were MPP deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim, state and IEM Sarawak Branch committee members as well as the council staff.
