The almost complete new Sungai Merah Market.

SIBU: The new Sungai Merah market is expected to open for business next month.

The Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, said the project was at 95.81 percent completed, with only minor touch up needed.

“Only a slight delay of 0.56 per cent,” he said in a video posted in Pusat Khidmat N54 Pelawan Facebook page yesterday (March 29).

“All the original hawkers will go back to the market to start their businesses, and we also have extra hawker stalls for rent and a brand-new food court.

“We are going to open the tender to invite some very attractive food handlers to come and start their businesses there.

“I believe that the new market will give a new experience to all shoppers and a better business environment to the hawkers,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after attending a talk on Sales and Service Tax (SST) update at Methodist Pilley Institute here yeaterday (March 30).

The Pelawan assemblyman pointed out the new double-storey market aimed to modernise and stimulate the local economy in the Sungai Merah area and is among the first project approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in the Pelawan constituency.

“In the future, we will have more and more projects in Sungai Merah area to beautify and upgrade it so that it will become a heritage and a new place to go to in Sibu,” he said.

The soon-to-be-completed new market will have nine food stalls, 18 dry market stalls, and five wet market stalls. It will also have trading spaces for seasonal fruits sellers.
