SIBU: The country’s second low-cost carrier, MYAirline, made its inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sibu on yesterday (Jan 18).

Upon arrival at 2.45pm, the flight, which took off with 178 passengers aboard, was given a water cannon salute.

Federal Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, who was also aboard, said the inaugural flight coincided with the Chinese New Year celebration as well as depicted the airline’s festival spirit.

“I can feel every element provided by MYAirline even though it is a low-fare company but the service is very good. The services provided give satisfaction, especially to folk in Sibu,” he said at Sibu Airport on Wednesday.

When asked whether or not the ministry was looking into high ticket prices during the festive season, Firdaus said they had been discussing with the Ministry of Transport.

“I was informed that minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing already met with the airline companies as well regarding this issue. We are well aware that the increase in ticket flights is unfair to the public.”

Meanwhile, MYAirline chief executive officer Rayner Teo said the new route, which is the second destination in Sarawak apart from Kuching, would provide travellers with greater connectivity between East and West Malaysia.

“I am also happy to announce that in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur-Sibu route, we have launched the Sarawak Super Sale with the travel period from Jan 18 to July 31, 2023.”

He noted that the Sarawak Super Sale promotion included all-in fares from as low as RM59 with free 15kg baggage and seat selection.

“This limited offer is available for Kuching, Sibu and Miri flights with a booking period from Jan 18-19, 2023 and a travel period from Jan 18 to July 31, 2023.”

MYAirline is offering two flights daily between Kuala Lumpur and Sibu.
