KUCHING: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi have lauded journalists and media practitioners, highlighting their crucial roles in gathering and disseminating information.

In line with the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA), he encouraged journalists to continue serving with dedication, honesty, and courage, safeguarding the integrity of the profession and the welfare of society.

“On this significant day, I want to express appreciation and gratitude to all of you who have worked tirelessly to deliver accurate, balanced, and high-quality news and information to the people of this country.

“You all are the eyes and ears of the public, conveying their voices. As a leader, I respect and acknowledge the important role of the media community.

“Without your hard work and dedication, our society would surely struggle to make informed decisions based on accurate information,” he said in a Facebook post.

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, the Kapit MP acknowledged that the role of journalists has become increasingly challenging.

He asserted that journalists now serve as the primary defense against the spread of fake news and misinformation.

“This year’s HAWANA theme, ‘Etika Teras Kewartawanan Mapan’, underscores the importance of responsible journalism practiced by the majority of media practitioners in Malaysia.

“It emphasises the priority placed on delivering constructive news that uplifts both the people and the nation,” he added.

At the same time, Nanta extended the invitation to media practitioners to the HAWANA celebration hosted for the first time in the city.

He said this provides an opportunity for everyone to explore the lively mix of Sarawak’s rich culture and uniqueness.
