KUCHING: The National Subfertility Centre will be established in Sarawak, said Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She revealed that the building is already in the process of renovation, with plans to incorporate a laboratory as a crucial component.

Expressing her intention to propose the addition of the lab to the state government, she said there is a need for such a facility in Sarawak to address the existing shortfall in fertility services.

“While the building renovation is underway, the lab is yet to be constructed. Sarawak currently has some labs in hospitals, but they are insufficient to meet the demand.

“I will discuss this with the state government, seeking their approval and possible financial support.

“But other costs we will bear. Currently, it’s in the process of renovation. The building is already there,” she said.

Recently, the federal government has officially approved the establishment of the first National Subfertility Centre in Shah Alam, slated to be completed within the next five years.

Nancy, who is the Santubong MP, said the centre plays a crucial role in contributing to the growth of Malaysian families by providing assistance to couples facing fertility challenges.

She said the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) will oversee the centre, managing comprehensive fertility treatments and family well-being services.

The centre is poised to serve as a coordination hub for research, the latest treatment technologies, and expert training in Malaysia.

“As such, our ministry aims to establish a lab similar to the one in Shah Alam. In Shah Alam, we were allocated a sum of RM171 million,” she added.
