KUCHING: Major social media platforms such as Google, META and TikTok need to contribute back to Malaysia’s media industry, said Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications and Digital Minister emphasised the need to address this issue seriously, given that these social media platforms benefit significantly from local media content to its counterpart, the local media organisations.

“We observed that a lot of our content produced by local media organisations is used by these platforms, but the return to our own media industry is very low.

“Therefore, we see that there is a need to consider a mechanism for these platforms to contribute back to the media industry in Malaysia.

“To address this issue, the ministry has engaged in discussions with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Communications and Digital Malaysia (KKD) to evaluate the need to register and license these platforms,” he said.

He said these when met by reporters at Jalan Bako, Petra Jaya here yesterday.

When questioned about the plans to host the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2024 in Sarawak next year, Fahmi said his party would hold a detailed discussion on the matter.

“We haven’t delved into the details yet because we have current tasks that require our attention, including Malaysia Day.

“Maybe after we have addressed these immediate priorities, we will revisit the discussion,” he said.
