KOTA SAMARAHAN: The 31st Infantry Brigade headquarters (31st Bde) in Bintulu is expected to be operational by June, next year.

Army chief General Tan Sri Zamrose Mohd Zain said a building to house the headquarters has been identified and is currently in the process of being rented.

“Yes we are establishing a headquarters in Bintulu. For now, the 31st Bde is still in the Unaco Camp in Sibu and we are planning to move them to Bintulu.

“We have also identified quarters for them in Bintulu. We expect the new headquarters to be operational by June of next year,” he told a press conference here, today (Dec 27).

Following the restructuring of Border Regiment Battalion to Standard Infantry Battalion, he said they are now recognised as equal to other battalions, contrary to their previous post as backups.

“We recognised them because we are confident that they have reached the age of maturity after 15 years since their establishment. We want them to be able to do multi-role and multitasking and be involved in our various types of exercises.

“They are no longer soldiers who have been absorbed into the regular ranks, but they are the same as those who have finished training at the training centres.

“God willing, in the future, they will become a professional regiment on par with other regiments,” he added.
