100 students attend Training and Industrial Awareness Programme

KOTA SAMARAHAN  : More than 100 participants from various schools in the Southern Zone  attended a Training and Industrial Awareness Programme (TRIA) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) from 14  to 15 May.

The event was  organised by The Workforce Development Unit (WDU), Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS) and Unimas.

It was officiated by Unimas’ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni),  Prof Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman at CAIS Auditorium and  attended by respective faculty leaders of STEM related programmes.

The purpose of TRIA was to create training and industrial awareness among students by connecting schools, institutions and industries.

It aimed to:

• Reach out, create awareness and develop interest in TVET & STEM

• Familiarise students with STEM-related courses, institutions and career pathways that match Sarawak’s industrial needs

• Expose students to relevant industries and the different career opportunities that exist in the particular field

• Mentor, inspire and empower Form 3 students to make more informed decisions about post PT3 training and education

• Support partner institutions in their promotions and recruitment efforts.

The recent TRIA was filled with various interesting and engaging STEM-related activities.

Four faculties participated in hosting the activities, namely, the Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology (FCSIT), Faculty of Resource Sciences & Technology (FRST) and Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences (FHMS).

At the Faculty of Engineering (FENG), the students were exposed to various engineering fields such as Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

The activities at FENG included demonstrations and hands on activities on environmental engineering, fluid mechanics, robotics and digital & analogue electronics.

Students also enjoyed the Computer Science (CS) Unplugged activities at the Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology (FCSIT).

CS Unplugged comprised  free learning activities that taught Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles that used cards, strings, crayons and lots of running around.

The students were exposed to Biotechnology & Chemistry labs at the Faculty of Resource Sciences & Technology.

Meanwhile, at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the students participated in the demonstrations and hands on activities of CPR & Human Anatomy.
