KUCHING: Two areas have been recommended for the implementation of Safe City Programme-Whitening Black Spots Area Initiative.

The areas are Kampung Kudei and Jalan Nanas.

Mayor of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai disclosed that the programme would be carried out in accordance with Kuching Clean, Beautiful, Safe (CBS) Enhancement Plan 2013-2017.

“The black spots areas were chosen not just by pointing fingers but through our close cooperation with the police and several departments such as National Anti-Drug Agency and Welfare Department.

“The crimes committed in these areas are considered petty crime. Our focus is on trying to get the community to cooperate with the commission and instil the idea that only the community can look after themselves,” he told reporters after the launching of National Key Result Areas (NKRA) Action Plan to Reduce Crime Workshop at DBKU City Library here yesterday.

Abdul Wahap added that the workshop aimed to get the community to suggest sustainable programmes that would clarify and reduce crime rates in the areas.

“We want this approach to be more holistic as well,” he said.

He disclosed that on 1 August 2018, DBKU would be launching the second plan of CBS in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary of DBKU.

“The second CBS plan will more focus on community wealth creation as our community is now involved in businesses such as producing ‘madu kelulut’.

“We want the community members who are involved in businesses to have a certain key performance index (KPI) with DBKU as the previous KPI was set up by the commission,” said Wahap.

At present, there are 40 neighbourhood watches under DBKU after the implementation of CBS plans.
