SARIKEI: Who will be crowned Sarawak Badang 2018? Who will lift the Iron woman title? All of them will be answered in the Strongest Men and Women Tournament organised by the Malaysia Strongmen Association (MSA) here, come Feb 24 to 25.

Chairman of the organising committee, Assistant Superintendent Police (ASP) Ricky Poh said a total of 35 participants from across the country including Thailand and Brunei Darussalam will take part in the competition. He said some of the disciplines that the participants need to follow, including Load Lifting Racing, Moving Tire, Pulling the Truck, Weightlifting and Atlas Stone.

“At this tournament, we have various specific theme, Iron Men, Log Challenge and Open Women. What is certain for the tournament this time, we are setting up varieties where they need to lift logs, “he told a media conference, here, recently. The tournament offers a total prize of RM20,000 besides trophies, medals and certificates of participants.

The first place for the Male Open category would bring home RM5,000 cash, a trophy, medal and certificate, second place RM3,000 cash, a trophy, medal and certificate. Third place winner will receive a cash prize of RM2,000, a trophy, medal and certificate, fourth RM900 cash, a trophy, medal and certificate, RM800 cash for fifth place, a trophy, medal and certificate and lastly the sixth to 10th places will receive RM100 cash, medals and certificates.

Meanwhile, for the Women Open category, the champion will receive RM3,000 cash, a trophy, medal and certificate, runner-up RM2,000 cash, a trophy, medal and certificate, third RM1,000 cash, a trophy and certificate, fourth RM800 cash, a trophy, medal and certificate, fifth RM500 cash, a trophy, medals and certificate, for sixth to 10th places will bring home a cash of RM50, medals and certificates.

“So far, it is the biggest prizes we have provided to the participants. We hope the championship will run smoothly according to the plan,” he said. He said the tournament aims at promoting youth involvement in healthy activities, promoting fitness among the community as well as promoting Sarikei as a tourist centre by organising rugged competitions. “Selection of Sarikei is based on several criteria including, the active involvement of local youth in extreme sports.

In fact, we are one of the first places in Sarawak to hold such tournaments. “I hope all committee members will give full commitment to ensure that the events are held successfully,” he said. Meanwhile, Sarikei Division Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Officers (MTACYS), Munir Din said the organisers had planned several side events to highlight the event.

“Among them, entertainment stage performances that will see the presence of the leading artistes of Bumi Kenyalang,” he said.
